Grassroots organizing centered on housing, mutual aid, and direct action. Early, and often inconsistent, legal pathways to name and gender marker changes began to develop. Newsletters and zines circulated in counterpublic networks while mainstream media continued to pathologize or criminalize trans people in their representations.
