A coup d’état begins Argentina’s last military dictatorship, which would last until 1983. State forces tortured and disappeared an estimated 30,000 people accused of “politically subversive” ideas or actions. People who we would today call travestis or trans were also arrested and tortured by the police and the military, regardless of their political position. Many travesti and trans survivors describe the dictatorship as an intensification of persecution, and emphasize that despite the return to democracy in 1983, daily harassment and arrests continued.
