Gwen Smith launches Remembering our Dead, a crowd-sourced website used to document anti-trans violence across the country. The project eventually leads to the start of the annual Transgender Day of Remembrance, co-founded by Smith, Nancy Nangeroni, and Jahaira DeAlto to commemorate the murder of Black trans women, Rita Hester and Chanelle Pickett. The first observance takes place in San Francisco and Boston in November 1999 and continues annually to this day.
