Ava Betty Brown testifies defiantly in a Chicago courtroom—“everything I own is in the name of Betty Brown. . . . If I am a man, I don’t know it” after being arrested for “female impersonation.” Unlike Jorgensen, she is denied access to surgery in Denmark. Her story was published later that year in the Chicago Daily Defender (Snorton 161-162).
